Sleek Design, Packed with Ports
The Vivobook S15 2024 is sleek and lightweight at just over 1.4 kilos. The aluminum chassis is sturdy, and the silver finish, though prone to fingerprints, looks clean.
It also features a good selection of ports, including Thunderbolt 4, HDMI, and USB-A ports for various connectivity needs.
Performance: Not Without Hiccups
Qualcomm claims the Snapdragon X Elite outperforms Apple’s M3 MacBooks, and my benchmarks supported this, with the Vivobook S15 excelling in Geekbench scores.
ASUS’s heat pipes and dual fans kept thermals in check, maintaining quiet operation even under heavy workloads.
However, gaming encountered issues: Doom refused to launch, and although Spiderman Remastered ran adequately on medium settings, there were graphical glitches such as missing textures.
These challenges are likely attributable to ongoing software optimization for ARM processors in gaming applications.
AI Features Abound
The Vivobook S15 2024 features a dedicated co-pilot key for Microsoft’s AI assistant. This provides AI-powered features like automatic background blurring and framing during video calls, ideal for remote work.
Additionally, the laptop can automatically dim or hibernate the display when idle and awaken upon your return.
Software: Asus Tweaks and AI-powered Creativity
Asus throws in a few of its own software utilities with the Vivobook S15. MyAsus lets you customize power management profiles, tweak audio settings, and keep your laptop updated.
Also, Story Cube, an Asus app, consolidates media files for creating AI-enhanced video slideshows.
Display and Audio
The Vivobook S15 features a 15.6-inch OLED display (pretty close to Lenovo ThinkBook) with a 120Hz refresh rate and 3K resolution, providing crisp, detailed visuals and wide color coverage for creative work.
The speakers give loud, high-quality sound, offering a rich audio experience.
Usability: A Comfortable Typing Experience
The Vivobook S15 features a backlit keyboard that spans nearly the entire chassis. While key travel is shallow, it provides comfortable feedback.
The large touchpad supports multi-touch gestures for brightness, volume, and video playback control.
Battery Life
Asus claims the Vivobook S15 offers up to 18 hours of battery life, but my real testing yielded about seven hours with mixed usage.
This is below the advertised duration, though future software optimizations may improve it.
Wrapping Up
The Asus Vivobook S15 2024 is a pleasing first look at what Snapdragon X Elite laptops can offer. It delivers solid performance for everyday tasks, has a beautiful display, and gives a glimpse into the future of AI-powered features.
However, the gaming experience needs refinement, and the battery life doesn’t quite live up to the hype.
But, this is a best start for ARM laptops, but it might be wise to wait for further software optimization before taking the plunge.
