We got our hands on a pre-production unit of to see if it can live up to the hype.

We’ll be putting Lenovo Legion 5i Gen 9 (2024) gaming laptop through its paces, testing its performance, display, price and features to see if it’s the real deal for serious gamers.

The starting price for the Legion 5i Gen 9 (16″ Intel) Gaming Laptop is $1,609.99.

Design with Powerful Specs

Let’s start with the look and feel. The Legion 5i features a sleek and stylish design with a recycled aluminium chassis.

It definitely has a premium vibe, and the build quality feels solid. However, with a weight of 2.3 kg, it’s not exactly the most portable laptop out there.

On the bright side, you get a generous selection of ports, including the latest Thunderbolt 4 and HDMI 2.1, so you can connect all your peripherals with ease.

Display and Audio

This laptop’s display is what I think a gamer’s dream.

The 16-inch QHD IPS panel with a 240Hz refresh rate and Dolby Vision HDR delivers smooth visuals.

The audio is awesome with the dual 2W speakers that deliver surprisingly room-filling sound.

Webcam and Microphones

For video calls and streaming, the Legion 5i Gen 2024 has a decent 1080p webcam with a thin bezel placement.

While the built-in privacy shutter is a nice touch for security-minded users.

Dual mics ensure clear audio for meetings or casual chats, no need for a separate headset, for sure.

Keyboard

The Legion 5i comes equipped with a full-sized keyboard that feels great to type on.

Gamers will surely appreciate the dedicated number pad and the well-spaced cursor keys.

The RGB backlighting adds a nice touch of customization, and you can adjust the lighting effects through Lenovo’s Vantage software.

Performance and AI Engine

With an Intel Core i7 14659HX processor, 32GB DDR5 RAM, and RTX 4000 GPU options, the Legion 5i tackles demanding games with ease.

Lenovo’s Vantage software offers network traffic prioritization and has a new AI Engine+ that automatically optimizes performance for specific games, ensuring peak performance.

Testing and Performance

It’s important to note that this review is based on a pre-production unit, so I wasn’t able to run any benchmarks.

I played Forza Horizon 5, Spider-Man Remastered, and Returnal on the highest settings, and the frame rates stayed consistently smooth.

I would love to see how it feels playing Banishers-Ghost of New Eden, for sure.

The Legion Coldfront Hyper Coolant system is great of keeping things from getting too hot, although it does get a bit noisy under heavy load.

Battery Life and Storage

Since this was a pre-production unit, we weren’t able to test the battery life definitively.

However, it does come with an 80W battery, so you can expect decent battery life for everyday tasks but likely shorter times when gaming.

Storage options include 512GB or 1TB of PCIe Gen 4 SSDs, which offer plenty of space for games and applications.

The Wrap

Suffice it to say, Lenovo Legion 5i (2024) is surely a powerful gaming laptop with excellent performance, a beautiful display, and a comfortable keyboard.

The inclusion of the Legion AI Engine+ feature for optimizing gaming experiences is what appeals me the most.

However, for portability, consider other options. But for performance and display, the Legion 5i is the best.
